SALE OF THE WARAKIRRI IVANHOE CORRECTIONAL CENTRE COMPLETED

The sale of the former Warakirri Ivanhoe Correctional Centre to mineral sand mining company, Tronox, has been completed.
“This site will be upgraded to provide much-needed accommodation for workers at the nearby Atlas Campaspe mine, supporting economic activity and job growth in the Ivanhoe area and across the region,” Member for Barwon Roy Butler said.
The Warakirri Centre will be used as an accommodation hub for workers on the Atlas-Campaspe Project and Ivanhoe Rail Siding. It is expected that Tronox and the haulage contractor will utilise the former staff houses and the individual quarters for 30 to 40 residential and drive-in/drive out workers.
Tronox hopes to attract a mix of new families and individual workers to live in the facility, whilst also maximising employment opportunities for local community members.
“The Warakirri Centre is a great facility, with a lot of potential. We are looking forward to continuing to work with residents and Central Darling Shire Council on how we can achieve some great community outcomes,” Peter Collins, Site Director Eastern Operations stated.
The facility, which has been vacant since 2020, will require refurbishment prior to employees mobilising later this year.

A “Recruitment Meet and Greet” will also be scheduled in Ivanhoe and Balranald for residents who are interested in working on the project. More information will be released soon with details about the event and how to register.
The Atlas-Campaspe project has an approximate 10-year mine life, with significant reserve upside. The mine is under construction and expected to commence operations later this year.
Aboriginal communities in NSW’s Far West will now also have better access to health services as well as job and education opportunities, following the transfer of the former Brewarrina correctional centre site to the Brewarrina Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) and Brewarrina Shire Council.
Mr Butler said the largest portion of the site had been transferred to the LALC, to establish primary industry and agricultural enterprises, and employment and education opportunities, while the remainder has been transferred to Council for lease to Orana Haven Aboriginal Corporation, to offer women’s drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.
