THROWBACK 2020: Jeeps visit Condobolin
OCTOBER 2020:
A convoy of military vehicle enthusiasts pulled into Condobolin for a short visit on Wednesday, 7 October 2020.
They rolled into town in their World War II Army Jeeps, creating a stir at Memorial Park, where they stopped for a short break.
The group of nine plus partners left Scone on 27 September for what they are calling their ‘COVID-19 Breakout’ trip.
“This is a get together for like minded people who like to play around with old green machines,” participant Barry Peterson explained.
“We came from the Hunter Valley, up to Lightening Ridge, across to Bourke and followed the river along, made our way to Tilpa and Wilcannia.
Then we went Cobar then made our way out the Hillston Road to Euabalong.
“We pick a location to stay at along the way and then we try to support the town in any way we can.
We stay, have a yarn and spend some money – we also have a good time while we are at it.”
All the vehicles in the convoy are World War II Jeeps. Each one is lovingly cared for by its owner.
“These vehicles were universally used by the military all over the word during World War II.
They were also used later,” Mr Peterson stated.
“Most of us love to tinker around with the vehicles, but more importantly we are trying to preserve the history of them for future generations.
We can tell the Jeep’s story and then that history can be passed on.
“There is a big movement all over the world for restoring these type of vehicles.
“Some of the Jeeps here have a history of military engagement in various countries in World War II.
Others have been restored after being rescued from all manner of places.
“We go on trips all the time. My Jeep has even been to Europe with me, where I drove it around while I was on holiday.
“The vehicles mean a lot to us and we just want to share that appreciation with others,” he concluded.
