THROWBACK 2019: Drought relief received with hopeful hearts
JUNE 2019:
In June 2019, the Sydney District 4×4 Club completed their fourth and biggest yet, drought relief run to help NSW farming communities.
The town welcomed them with open arms and hopeful hearts, touched by the generosity of those wanting to make a difference during this prolonged drought.
Club member and trip coordinator, Craig Upton, has spent the past few months planning this latest drought run to Lake Cargelligo, 564 kilometres west of Sydney in the Lachlan Shire.
Upton said, “This trip has been the biggest and most successful one yet for our club and for the first time we had the use of a semi-trailer to carry the hay, plus club members towed trailers full of other donated products into town.”
The group arrived at the showground at around 3.30pm after the drive up from Sydney and with help from the community, unloaded the semi and trailers which were packed full of hay, donated stock feed and other items. Lake Cargelligo resident Peter McFadyen was the local co-ordinator for the event.
This drought relief run not only brought welcome stockfeed and other essentials to the Lake Cargelligo community; it demonstrates that the Aussie spirit and bond between the city and the country, is still strong.
Club members enjoyed a game of lawn bowls, the local AFL derby between the Lake Tigers and Tulli Grasshoppers and dined with the community at the Commercial Hotel on Friday and the bowling club on Saturday, with entertainment provided by legendary singer-songwriter Pat Drummond. As an extra treat, the club distributed luxury skincare and make-up kits that were kindly donated by Kyani, to every lady at the bowling club on Saturday night.
A local Hills District sporting club, the Kings Langley Cricket Club, raised a staggering $3,600 to purchase sporting gear which was donated to the various clubs in the Lake Cargelligo district.
Cricket club committee member and fellow Sydney District 4×4 club member, Richard Clarke, said “buying new sports gear to help out the local sporting clubs seemed a perfect and fitting way we could help the community.”
Famous Australian singer-songwriter Pat Drummond donated his time and supported the event by playing two free gigs over the weekend, entertaining club members and locals at the Commercial Hotel on Friday night and the Lake Cargelligo Bowling Club on Saturday night.
Sydney District 4×4 club meets each month at the Crestwood Community Centre in Baulkham Hills, Sydney and has over 200 members.
