Stage 5 Agriculture Students attend Dohne Prime Lamb Schools Competition with great success
Report
Four Stage 5 Agriculture students recently travelled to Orange to represent Lake Cargelligo Central School at the Dohne Prime Lamb Schools Competition.
Since February, the students have worked tirelessly preparing their Dohne wethers for competition. Their commitment has included feeding, weighing, general husbandry and halter training, demonstrating both dedication and excellent livestock management skills.
The competition provided students with a fantastic opportunity to learn from industry professionals through a range of practical workshops and presentations. Highlights included a careers panel featuring Peta Bradley (Meat & Livestock Australia), Emily Pitt (Ag N Vet) and Keiran from For Flocks Sake Veterinary Consultancy. Students also met representatives from Gundagai Lamb, where two of our competition wethers were processed during the school holidays, providing valuable insight into the paddock-to-plate production process.
Throughout the day, students watched their wethers being shorn, attended a working dog demonstration, observed meat and fat scanning of their sheep and explored a variety of trade displays, including Shearwell Tags, Bendigo Bank, Furney’s Stockfeeds and several Dohne stud breeders showcasing their rams and ewes.
The team also competed in the live judging competition, representing Region/Group 2 against Griffith High School, Condobolin High School, Forbes High School and Red Bend Catholic College. After winning their group, they progressed to the overall final against the winners from Groups 1, 3, 4 and 5, where they achieved an outstanding 3rd place overall.
Their success continued during the presentation ceremony, with the team being awarded Group 2 Champions in the Carcass Judging Competition before going on to finish 3rd overall in the carcass judging section across the entire competition.
Congratulations to the Stage 5 Agriculture students on their outstanding achievements. Their hard work, dedication and willingness to embrace learning opportunities throughout the year have been rewarded with excellent results, and they represented their school with pride.
We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Daniel Pumpa for his outstanding organisation of the competition and to Sandy Pye for visiting our school throughout the preparation period to monitor and assess the progress of our wethers. We also acknowledge and thank the judges, stewards, presenters and the many sponsors whose generous support and commitment made this valuable educational opportunity possible.
Lastly we would like to thank our dedicated agriculture teacher, Mrs Coughran, for her unwavering support through this whole process.
