Would you like to be the next Condobolin Showgirl?

Condobolin Showgirl Coordinator Sue Mitchell is encouraging local girls aged between 18 and 24 to sign up to be part of this year’s competition.

“It is such a fantastic experience for those girls who enter,” she said.

“Entrants gain self-confidence and have the chance for personal development.

“It is a chance to be a voice for the community, build new friendships and professional networks.”

Ms Mitchell is encouraging local women to enter with a friend, and enjoy the Showgirl experience together.

“The Showgirl competition is not a beauty pageant, but an event where women can showcase their local knowledge, community spirit and personality,” she said.

“There is also the fact all showgirl entrants can win prizes valued at over $2,500.

“It is so much fun. Be part of a wonderful community tradition and enter in the 2015 Condobolin Showgirl competition.”

All Showgirl entrants will attend a luncheon and participate in an interview process on 15 August, and then attend the President’s Cocktail Party before the annual Show Ball.

During the interview phase, the three judges will be looking for personality, confidence, general knowledge (local, Australian and international current events), style, grooming and deportment, rural knowledge, ambition and goals, dictation and speech.

The showgirls will be presented at 8.30pm during the Show Ball, and the winner will be announced on the night.

2014 Show Ball shines

Kristen Polimeni was announced the 2014 Condobolin Showgirl at the annual Show Ball held at the Condobolin RSL on Saturday night. Although the RSL was a last-minute change of location (see story page 3) for the ball, many of the 264 ball patrons have described it as the “best Show Ball ever”.

“I thank you for your understanding of the situation which has led to the change of venue at very short notice. We particularly thank Ian Dowling and staff and the Condobolin RSL Club for accommodating the ball,” said show secretary, Carol-Ann Malouf, during the Showgirl presentation.

“Let’s make this ball and this year’s Show, the best yet.”

By the end of the ball, it would appear that this aim was achieved – largely due to the warmth and comfort of the venue, the second “can” bar to speed up service, and particularly the fabulous sounds of Gabe Music.

The announcement of Kristen, 18, as Condobolin’s 51st Showgirl was the highlight of the evening. Kristen has recently commenced as a pathology collector for Barratt and Smith. Prior to that, when she first arrived in the district she spent three months working as a contract tractor driver in the district.

Kristen, who has been in Condobolin since early this year, hails from Rankins Springs and completed her schooling last year at Yanco Agricultural High School.

Since she was young, she has had work experience in all aspects of farm work in the Rankins Springs to Griffith district.

No stranger to the Show scene, she has been competing in pavilion events and indulging her greatest hobby and sporting interest, horse riding and equestrian events, for as long as she can remember.

Kristen’s aim is to do the best she can at everything she attempts; she believes that the outcome is not as important as knowing she has tried her best.

While it appeared that there would be three entrants in this year’s Showgirl competition, sadly two were unable to enter at the last minute.

“We thank Kristen very sincerely for her enthusiasm and support of the Showgirl Competition, particularly in the knowledge that she would still be assessed at today’s luncheon as the sole entrant to be considered for this year’s title,” said Carol-Ann.

The 2013 Condobolin Showgirl, Lily Ward, sashed Kristen as this year’s Showgirl. Lily was accompanied onstage by Show President, Ken Riach, who declared the ball open and thanked the small group who assisted him with the auditorium’s fabulous decorations.

Lily, who was Condobolin’s 50th Showgirl, is living between Condobolin and Forbes where she is pursuing her profession as a dentist.

The Condobolin community will hear more from both Kristen and Lily at the official opening of this year’s 120th Condobolin Show at 3:30pm on Saturday 23 August.

Kristen again faces the judges at the Zone Showgirl Final to be held in Bathurst on 28 February next year.

Later in the evening came the next highlight when Rachael Tickle was declared Belle of the Ball; Alison Manwaring the Matron of the Ball; and Michael Malouf the Best-Dressed Gentleman.

Such was the glamour of the ball’s patrons that several judges had to be tasked and the decision was considerably delayed before consensus was achieved.

The decision swung in favour of the debonair Mr Malouf (ahead of the equally splendidly attired Brett and Jed White, Crockett Hall, Peter and Gavin Stuckey, and Guy Shoemark), for his suggestion that a second bar, the “can” bar, be opened in the old “Blue Room”.
