The National Australia Bank’s decision to only operate its Condobolin Branch for three days a week has disappointed and outraged the community as well as many of its local customers.

The closing of the bank on Friday has been a particularly sore point with many, as Friday is the main banking day for many outlying customers as well as businesses wishing to clear cash from premises for over the weekend.

Allan Reddel of Equipment and Service, a major agribusiness in town, is concerned about the reduced hours. “We bank every day,” he said. “We have a couple of problems [with the Friday closing].

“If clients pay large amounts on Friday we will not be able to bank until Monday which may leave us paying interest. It is an inconvenience.”

“We don’t seem to count much in the country. NAB don’t even have an ATM [in Condobolin].”

Stephen Brassnett of Lachlan Agencies was equally disappointed. “We feel they will eventually shut [the bank] and we will have to change banks,” he said. He said that if the bank did close, his business would not deal with a bank that was not open in Condobolin.

“NAB have been withdrawing services from Condobolin over the years so we now have to deal with Parkes or Forbes on major issues,” said another NAB client who did not wish to be named. “Then they turn around and say Condobolin is not doing enough business to warrant staying open for five days. It is unbelievable.”

In a statement, Melissa Clare, Senior Manager Corporate Communications Retail of National Australia Bank said: “NAB continually reviews its branch network to ensure it has the right mix of banking options and services in each local area, and is in line with community expectations, customer preferences and business priorities.

“The change in opening hours at Condobolin branch is a result of a reduction in the number of people visiting the store for their banking needs, as well as limitations in staff availability.”

She went on to say: “Any decision to change opening hours is not taken lightly and takes into a range of factors including customer visits, the type of transactions completed in the branch, and the proximity of an Australia Post outlet or other NAB branch where people can also do their banking.

“These changes enable us to continue to support the banking needs of our local customers in a sustainable way.”
