Condobolin Tennis courts get a sand lift

• True grit: volunteers help spread sand at the Condobolin Tennis Courts: Bruce Patton, Richard Barnes, Will Dargin, Darryl Nairn and Michael Parker. DG

Spreading a truckload of sand around a tennis court isn’t the average person’s idea of a fun filled Sunday afternoon.

For a small but dedicated group of local volunteers however, it was a job that needed to be done.

Tennis Club representative, Darryl Nairn, said the sand would help maintain the quality of the newly renovated courts.

“The tennis club has funded one of the courts, while the Shire has funded the other, so we thank the Shire for that,” he said.

“In total, the project has cost over $50,000.

“The old [courts] had a lot of mould on them so they’ve had it.

“The sand gives the courts rigidity and helps preserve them.”

At the time of the interview, Michael Parker, Will Dargin, Rick Barnes and Darryl Nairn had been shovelling for sand for about two hours.

Bruce Patton was also helping out, though he didn’t want to say how long he’d been there.

“We’re encouraging anyone to lend a hand,” he said.

“Not just people from the tennis club either, anyone who’d like to help would be great.”
